| Baptism
...
Baptism is an english word derived
from the Greek word bapto, a term used in the first century to describe
the immersion of a garment first into bleach and then into dye, both
cleansing and changing the color of the cloth.
In
modern church culture the word baptism refers to a symbolic act of sprinkling
with or immersing a person in water. Why do we do this? It may seem
a bit strange, but it's really a lot like the first century process
described above.
We
immerse a new Christ-follower in water to symbolize the cleansing of
sin and birth of a new spiritual person. In other words, the old spiritual
man has died (been buried in the water) and the new spiritual man has
come (raised up clean and new). This whole process is eerily similiar
to the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, which is precisely why
we do it.
If you are a new Christ-follower and wish to be baptized or want to
talk more about it with a pastor, contact us anytime. We'd love to talk
with you.
